Twin House Addition

The 1923 house is part of a twin that had not been updated for decades. After our clients purchased it, they wanted to enlarge the kitchen, add a breakfast area, create a primary suite on the second floor and make the third floor bathroom more functional. 

We designed an addition allowing for a new and bigger kitchen with space for a breakfast table, maximizing the natural light and providing access to a new flagstone patio. During the initial site visit, we noticed the powder room was off the dining room, a “feature” desired by few homeowners! To make the space more functional, we moved the powder room into a storage area under the stairs and created a new pantry, transforming the former powder room window into a pass-through to the kitchen addition.

On the second floor, a small office was transformed into a master bathroom, enlarged by turning the existing window into a box bay. A Jack-and-Jill bathroom and several small closets were converted to a pair of walk-in-closets with pocket doors to eliminate any doors obstructing the hallway.

Low sloped ceilings made it impossible for adults to stand in the third floor bathroom. A dormer addition was designed to provide adequate ceiling height, and the tub and vanity were relocated to maximize efficiency and minimize expense.
